Wreck Beach and home party at Granville/Broadway
canadiantour, 08:02h
Aug 29 (Monday)
I got up at 4.30 am (!) to get to work for morning shift at 06 am. What, however, happened when I got there? They told me that I dont have to work at all! These unreliable folks of Canadians didnt send me the schedule and told me last week to be in the office at 6 am on Monday. As they changed the schedule but didnt send it to me, i didnt know that of course... so I went home and to bed again x) and slept a bit more from 7.30 till 09.00 am.
Actually I wanted to relax a bit on Wreck Beach this day, the weather wasnt THAT good for it, however.
At around noon Steffi and I went to Delaney's to get (hopefully) her schedule for her first work days at this coffee shop. She was fortunately lucky! =)
We went to the SWAP office to get our SIN cards and headed then for the Greyhound Bus station to inform ourselves a bit about further travel possibilites (to Portland and Tofino, Van Island).
After that we werent sure at start what we should do next. We were just thinking about it, standing at the skytrain station, when someone dropped his bag close to us and spoke to us in German...
It took me a few seconds to realize who it was. It was Malte, a guy from Germany with whom Steffi and I had contact for a long time already. It has already been in Canada since mid-June.
Steffi and I were invited to a „party“ at 7 pm and we arranged that Malte just came with us.
He took off to get settled in Samesun and Steffi and I decided to go to Wreck Beach despite the cool weather - just to have a look at the beach which is supposed to be very beautiful.
We took the sky-train to downtown and then the UBC-bus to UBC (University of British Columbia). A 10-minute walk and we were down at Wreck Beach, which was a really nice place.
We didnt go swimming, though, just relaxing and listening to music in the few sun rays =)
At around 5.30 pm we went back and met Malte at Granville/Broadway, where the home party was supposed to be. I was invited by Andy and Pierre, two guys i met during fundraising for UNICEF.
At their place there were a lot of other people (mainly francophone) to get to know. They were cooking dinner for us. As we were more people than they have expected, however, it took them quite long to get enough food for all of us... so dinner wasnt ready until 10 pm x) . When it was finally ready, however, it was great: Vegetarian Quiche, lentils, ratatouille and pan-fried bananas – delicious =D
It was a really nice evening with lots of good talks and –
We went home at around 11 pm and arrived finally there somewhen around midnight. Thank god that I dont have to get up at 4 am again next day xD

Grouse Mountain
canadiantour, 08:00h
Aug 28 (Sunday)
We slept long that day, just relaxing and doing some internet stuff ^^ time passed by very quickly so that it happened to be already 2 pm when we finally set off for the bus station, going first to Londsdale Quay and then to Grouse Mountain.
At around 4.30 pm we started our torture up the way to the peak of Grouse Mountain =P it was so hot and therefore even more tiring and exhausting. I really felt like an old woman ^^ heart throbbing heart against chest, panting heavily and feeling as if i am about to faint somehow. But Steffi and I managed it brillantly =D Its about 3 km the steapest way/stairs i have ever seen to the peak. It took us between 1,5 and 2 hours to get there. I heard about a record of about 21 minutes... ^^ so we definitely have to improve =P ^^
The view was overwhelming, the climb up was really worth it. Unfortunately we missed all the shows which are usually offered on the peak. At least we saw one of the two orphaned bears, living in a huge compound (very similiar to their natural habitat), however. We were just sitting in the peak-chair )for free), going to the very top of Grouse Mountain, when we spottet the bear somewhere bejond us. And we saw a chipmunk as well =D =) So cute and much tinier than I thought they to be.
At around 8 am we took the gondola (10 dollars) back to the ground and the bus back at home. We cooked some midnight dinner and took a shower. I finally went to bed at around 1.00 am.

Short report about the previous week
canadiantour, 09:20h
Hey, guys.
Sorry that i took my so long to do some updates on my blog here... but i was really busy and didnt want to spend too much time on the internet.
Here some short notes about what i did the previous week (i note it down as well for me as a little reminder xD)
Saturday (Aug 20) :
I arrived at my new home at at 7 am; settleing down there etc., building up bed, relaxing, … 9.30 am: meeting Elisa at London Drugs in Vancouver Downtown.
We went to a bar, drinking some cocktails and then to a club where it was really crazy... the lights there turned on at 3 am and the securities threw us out cause the clubs here are closing at aroung 3 am already..... - and actually we thought we can take the nightbus home. i mean we are in vancouver, arent we? in fact, however, there arent any nightbuses anymore at this time.... incredible! well we had to take a cab for that reason.
Sunday (Aug 21): sleeping long (till 10 or 11 am), relaxing, shopping, going to the beach in West Vancouver, going swimming in the sea =)
Monday (Aug 22): sleeping till 9.30 am, the first rainy day in Vancouver, relaxing at home, eating some spaghetti for lunch, meeting tanja and karsten at granville station at around 3 pm. Going together to metropolis at metrotown, shopping rain coat for steffi
buying dough for brownies and a 12-inch-pizza, making the pizza and the brownies together at steffi's and my place =) karsten and tanja leave at around 10.30 pm
Tuesday (Aug 23): getting up at around 08.30 am, breakfast etc.
09.45 am: set off to Park Royal station, taking bus to van downtown, going to public outreach office
11.20 am – 01 pm : share skills workshops at PO office
02 am – 06.45 pm: fundraising for UNICEF on the street (cambie st./14th avenue)
after work with my supervisor (chloe) back to office, with some other colleagues to a field to play kickball. Quite funny. Leave at 09.30 pm.
Meet tanja, steffi, elisa and karsten at cambie hostel, leaving at around 10.30 pm, at home at around 11.30 pm. Shortly after midnight: finally in bed =D
Wednesday (Aug 24): getting up at 07.30 am
at cymax office at around 09.00 am (too early...), having training for a new job at an office (cymax) from 09.30 am to 01.30 pm.
Buying hair dryer in London drugs (finally i have a canadian one which works properly!!! yeah! =) ), going to SWAP to check some bus routes, meeting tanja and steffi there at around 3 pm.
Walking with them to Queen Elizabeth Park (so amazing!), getting to know Jenny (another German - what a surprise!) there, being there till ca. 08.15 pm.
Going back by skytrain and then back home to west van
Thursday (Aug 25), Friday (Aug 26), Saturday (Aug 27): just working... what sucks... especially why the fundraising job is somehow stupid =/
I have still got the fundraising job for UNICEF (i am working for a company called public outrach) and i am still in my evaluation/training time. Actually I have to hit target every day, which means signing up people with altogether 30 dollars a month. i am doing quite bad i have to admit. altogether i had already three zero-days... ^^ on one day i had two people with 25 dollars/month in total and today (sat) i signed up a man with 15 dollars/month. on thursday next week it is my last chance to pass evaluation time. otherwise i cant continue this job. It is pity, but i dont mind that much because i dont like the company that much.... there are a lot of things i dont agree with ^^
and i have got this part-time job at the office cymax anyway. so i have still the possibility to earn money.
Probably i write a lot of stuff that you are not intersted in it at all xD but i dont that mind that much - just skip over it =P as i said it is as well a reminder of what i did for myself ;)
cheers

The two last days at the farm
canadiantour, 21:35h
Thursday/Friday, Aug 18 and 19
On Thursday my longest work day was awating me... fortunately i felt loads better this day, so i managed 10 hours of work (like harvesting kale and washing+baging salad) quite good ;)
Friday was already my last day on the farm. Orginally I wanted to leave on Sunday, but as the farmer people will be quite busy on Sunday, I decided to go already on Saturday. This way i wont have the chance to go Squamish, but well... probably better to relax a bit more right now ;) =P at least there is a week full of work awating me in Vancouver.. so I should be fit enough for that.
We were harvasting amongst others arugola, cumcumbers and zuccini on Friday. When we started to harvest the cucumbers, though, Claudie and I got to know that there is a wasp nest close to the bed. One stung Claudie in her hand and – of course I had the luck – to be stung right into the face...^^ so still one half of my face is swollen xD i wasnt delighted about that, of course, but fortunately it doesnt hurt anymore and i just hope that my face will come back to normal soon.
After work (4 pm) I was just taking a shower, doing my laundry and repacking my stuff in my backpack to be ready for the next day ;)
I am getting better with packing every time i have to do it, I think =P =D probably I wont have to do it the next 6 weeks, though.
And I learned some new english words during my stay on the farm, by the way, such as kale, parsley, cricket, swiss chard and beets to mention only some of them =) you will notice that almost all of them are vegetables =P hope that I can keep them in mind.
Tomorrow I have to get up already at around 4 am, so I will go to bed soon...=) cya

Whistler: Peak-to-Peak, Lost Lake Park and "Moguls"
canadiantour, 04:37h
Wednesday, Aug 17
Today I could sleep till 7 am. At about 8.15 am Claudie, the girl from Quebec, and I set off for Whistler. After a short break at the garage – as Claudie had an appointment there due to the car losing some transmission oil – we continued our about 1-hour-ride to Whistler. We arrived there about 10 am, Claudie dropping me at the tourist information centre.
Already during the journey i started to feel sick, by the way, stomachache annoying me from time to time. It this kind of state should remain all the long -.- …. , reducing the joy of the day a bit, but well... i cannot choose my state of health and didnt want the pain in my belly spoil my day in Whistler =P So it didnt prevent me to get a map from whistler and a ticket for the „Peak-to-Peak“. I went through Whistler Village to the first gondola, taking me up to Whistler mountain. I stayed there for a while, before taking the peak chair to the actual peak of Whistler mountain. It was an awesome view. Little houses and lakes, such as the Green Lake, spread in front of me =P
I went down to the last level again to have some kind of nap in the restaurant, including an area called „Christine's“ =D I needed some rest due to the continuening somachaches...
At last I got up to do the „Peak-to-Peak“, meaning that I took the gondola to the peak of Blackcomb Mountain. I wandered a little bit around there, enjoying the sight as good as possible... as the pain didnot stop compleately, i absoultely couldnt really go hiking... still the ride and the money for it were really worth it.
I decided to visit Blackcomb Adventure Area, offering lots of freetime activities, such as minigolf or any other attraction espacially for children. This Area was located in the Upper Village of Whistler. And as i really enjoyed the rides with the gondolas, i actually wanted to go back, using this kind of way. I couldnt, however. Once at the ground again, i couldnt use my ticket anymore... only i didnt now that before. In this way, I had the spontaneous idea to got to Lost Lake (Park). Despite the still-existing pains in my belly, i managed quite good to get there xD and in spite of the fact that Whistler is seen as one of the areas, being inhabitated by bears the most, i didnt see a single on xD they really seem to hide from me; perhaps just the wrong season. No idea. Hopefully i get to see some at last!
So, as i said, i went to Lost Lake, which was quite nice. I sat there for a while, eating some bits of fruits =) and went back again to Whistler Village, where i looked for a place to drink some tea... hoping to feel better afterwards. I chose a coffee house called „Moguls“. The two guys in there were absolutely kind and polite =D Till the rest of the evening I sat in there, drining my tea, listening to the music and dozing „half-sick“ on my chair. ^^ At about 10 pm Delaney picked me up from the nearby tourist info centre. I went finally to bed at 11, recovering from my sickness – the next day i actually felt loads better =D

Bike-ride to Pemberton Town, the One-Mile-Lake and the Nairn Falls
canadiantour, 04:35h
Tuesday, Aug 16
I decided to work today only till 2 pm, in order to have more freetime afterwards (and working the two addtional hours on Thursday instead). After work i got ready for my exploration tour to Pemberton town. At about 2.30 pm i set off with my borrowed bike and cycled along the street, enjoying the sun and the view of the mountains, partly with glaciers on their peak. Altogether its about 12 km to Pemberton town... so quite a distance. Fortunately the way is rather flat, no steap hills to cover. I took me about an hour to get there (firstly, i am not that fast, secondly i dont want to be that fast at all – finally i want to enjoy the ride and thirdly i stopped from time to time to take some photos ;) ). I went to the tourist info centre to get a map of Pemberton and an explanation how to get to One Mile Lake. At around 4 pm I arrived at the lake, offering a small beach with loth of children playing there. ;) I rested there for a while, recovering from the bike-ride which was in fact not THAT tiring ( it is supposed to be worse on the way back =P ).
Finally I decided to visit as well the nearby waterfall (the Nairn Falls in Nairn Provinical Park). The drawback of this decision, however, was the fact that i would have to cycle up a hill.... -.- As i managed it at last, i can tell you that it was worth it ;).
At around 6 pm I headed for home again. After some shoppings, including some more suncreen (I actually bought one with 110 UV-protection xD i hope, i wont get sunburned ever again. =P)., I started my final ride back home. And now i really thought that the way would never end... i was so relieved to see the three red post boxes where i just have to turn right and then i was already back at my trailer.
It was an awesome trip through Pemberton and a good training session ;) =P Altogether it must have been a distance of over 20 km.... perhaps I can try the way from Woernitz to Rothenburg ob der Tauber next time xD =P
But this was really nothing, compared to the mosquito bites I have got spread all over my body. THEY really drive me crazy.... thats one disadvantage here... so many mosquitos! Incredible and annoying! I counted about 10 bites on my right foot alone...-.- so itchy... =/ needs lots of strenght to prevent me from scratching...
A quick a shower, listening to some music in bed and going sleeping at around 10.30 pm to be wake enough for the next day ;)
